Stained Glass School, Inc. Annual Scholarships

Three annual scholarships are currently offered:

The Dorothy L. Maddy Academic Scholarship consists of one award up to $1000 to a student enrolled in a full-time academic program. A one-time renewal may be applied for.

The Dorothy L. Maddy Workshop/Seminar Scholarship consists of the award of tuition fees for hands-on, short-term workshops and classes. Applicants will be awarded up to $600. In each scholarship year, tuition fees for classes completed before the application deadline will not be eligible.

The Albinas Elskus Scholarship provided by the Maldeb Foundation. This scholarship is designated for an artist who displays the promise for creativity in the stained glass arts especially but not limited to the area of glass painting. The amount awarded will be the decision of the SGS Scholarship Committee up to $1000.

Scholarship Rules

Artists who work in all media are encouraged to apply. You do not need to have images of work in glass to be considered for a scholarship.

Deadline for applications: all materials must be received in the Stained Glass School offices by April 16th of each year. All applicants will be notified of the action taken by the review committee by April 27th of the same year. Please note that it is possible you may only be awarded partial funding for your request. Applicants may not receive scholarship funds in two consecutive years.

Scholarship monies may be used to cover tuition or supply costs. Tuition does not include room and board or transportation costs. Scholarship requests can be made to offset conference classes, but not travel or registration fees.

 All successful Scholarship applicants agree to submit an informal article and photos of work completed during the educational experience to the Stained Glass School, Inc. immediately upon completion of the course. The article and photos may be published in The Stained Glass Quarterly. Or, recipients are encouraged to attend the SGAA Conference following the workshop, seminar, or class and may be asked to make a slideshow or presentation board.

All scholarship monies will be sent directly to the educational institute or studio/instructor. In order to prevent delays, please supply the correct address, email, and telephone number of the institute’s financial aid office.

All successful Academic applicants will request the instructor to send a written evaluation and/or comments to the Stained Glass School, Inc upon completion of the school year in which the Dorothy L. Maddy Scholarship funds were utilized.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure all materials are received on time. Applicants are encouraged to send follow up emails if they are not notified by Headquarters that their materials were received. SGAA and SGS Board Members are not eligible for scholarship funds.

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Completed SGS Scholarship Application Form
  2. Cover letter including:
    Why you want to take this course.
    How the experience will enhance your future work in stained glass.
    Details of your previous stained glass/art experience.
    Please indicate if you are requesting funds from other sources for this purpose, and if you have been awarded a Stained Glass School scholarship in the past.
  3. 8-12 Photos of current artwork with accompanying photo page detailing:
    Title of work
    Completion Date
  4. Supply a short written autobiography. Include stained glass and art experiences to date. Discuss your future plans in regard to stained glass. Mention all pertinent work/school experiences, awards and memberships in professional/technical organizations.
  5. Academic applicants only: Submit a transcript of your grades
  6. (optional but highly recommended) Two letters of recommendation submitted under separate cover (may be emailed, attn: Scholarship Committee, with Applicant clearly noted in subject body.) Letters of recommendation will not be accepted from anyone who would directly benefit from applicant receiving requested funding, including the instructor of requested course.
  7. Current membership in the Stained Glass Association of America is encouraged, but not required to receive scholarship funds.
